Academic Evaluations

Evaluations

We offer a range of assessment tests to determine a child’s current reading, writing, and math levels, as well as to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The assessments are followed by comprehensive recommendations based on the child’s age, reading level, and goals. Continual intervention is essential to build the necessary foundation and skill set to achieve these goals. While the assessments are typically conducted in person, remote assessments are also available.

We provide assessments for parents and teachers who are uncertain about a child's reading abilities, offering an overview and a recommended action plan to ensure students who need reading education intervention can succeed. Custom programs can be created to address specific areas of focus.

  • Evaluations are administered one-on-one sessions.
  • Each evaluation includes a number of tests such as norm-referenced academic achievement tests, informal tests and surveys to help determine a child’s academic strengths and weakness.

Pre/Post Screeners

  •  Wide Range Achievement Test, 5th Edition (WRAT5)
    • measures and monitors fundamental reading, spelling, and math skills.
  • Test of Written Spelling Fifth Edition (TWS-5)
    • The TWS-5 is a norm-referenced test of spelling.  Using a dictated word format (has no visual cues), the TWS-5 provides a valid estimate of a student’s ability to spell words in written form.  The TWS-5 helps to identify children who may need direct instruction in spelling and, because it has two forms, the TWS-5 is a valuable assessment to measure overall improvement in spelling as a result of intervention.
  • Test of Word Reading Efficiency Second Edition (TOWRE-2)
    • The TOWRE is a timed test that assesses a student’s ability to quickly and accurately read sight words as well as his/her ability to apply phonetic and structural analysis strategies to decode single and multisyllabic nonsense words.
    • The Sight Word Efficiency (SWE) subtest assesses the number of real words printed in vertical lists that an individual can accurately identify within 45 seconds. Similarly, Phonemic Decoding Efficiency (PDE) subtest measures the number of pronounceable nonwords presented in vertical lists that an individual can accurately decode within 45 seconds.
  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test - Dyslexia Index Fourth Edition
    • WIAT-4 Dyslexia Index is a brief, individually-administered, a performance-based screening tool that provides risk assessment, strength of risk, and interpretive information for team and parent/caregiver communication regarding individuals who may be at risk for dyslexia.
    • Word Reading subtest measures the child’s letter/sound knowledge in single word reading.
    • Orthographic Fluency subtest measures an examinee’s orthographic lexicon or sight vocabulary knowledge.
    • Pseudoword Decoding subtest measures an examinee’s phonic decoding skills.

Comprehensive Academic Evaluations

  •  Wechsler Individual Achievement Test®, Fourth Edition (WIAT®-4 or WIAT®-IV)
    • This test measures an individual’s academic achievement.
    • It assesses an individual's ability to apply cognitive skills and learned knowledge to grade-level expectations in reading, math, and written and oral language.
  • Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, Third Edition (KTEA™-3)
    • This test is designed to assess academic achievement for individuals aged 4 years and 6 months to 25 years and 11 months.
    • This individually administered test measures achievement in reading, written language, oral language, and mathematics.

Comprehensive Dyslexia Evaluation

  •  Wechsler Individual Achievement Test®, Fourth Edition (WIAT®-4 or WIAT®-IV)
    • This test measures an individual’s academic achievement. It assesses an individual's academic achievement (or ability to apply cognitive skills and learned knowledge to grade-level expectations) in reading, math, and written and oral language.
  • Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing Second Edition (CTOPP-2)
    • The CTOPP-2 assesses six subcategories of phonology, which provide three composite scores.
  • Test of Word Reading Efficiency Second Edition (TOWRE-2)
    • The TOWRE is a timed test that assesses a student’s ability to quickly and accurately read sight words, as well as his/her ability to apply phonetic and structural analysis strategies to decode single and multisyllabic nonsense words.
  • Gray Oral Reading Test Fourth Edition (GORT-5)
    • An individual’s rate and accuracy scores are determined by how long it takes them to read a passage and how many deviations from the print are made.  The sums of the rate and accuracy scores are then used to determine fluency score, which reflects his/her overall rate of reading and word recognition accuracy.  After reading each passage, the individual answers multiple-choice questions (literal, inferential, evaluative) based on the story.  Responses to the questions determine their comprehension score for the passage.

Progress Monitoring

  •  Test of Word Reading Efficiency Second Edition (TOWRE-2)
    • The TOWRE-2 is a timed test that assesses a student’s ability to quickly and accurately read sight words, as well as his/her ability to apply phonetic and structural analysis strategies to decode single and multisyllabic nonsense words.
  • Reading Fluency Monitor
    • Fluency is the rate at which a child can recognize and read words accurately. This strongly predicts how a student will score on high-stakes assessments designed to measure high-order reading skills.
